Glass Museum – Cloning

This sculpture is an art presentation. Gideon calls it "cloning". Although he's not a scientist, he argues that if scientists will manage to clone humans, they won't be able to make them identical.

But actually, he expresses himself here, because with the technique he applies, sculptures cannot be the same. Each sculpture is unique, special and genuine. We have here six sculptures, but if you look closer you will see they are not the same. Each statue is different. The foreheads are different, the eyes are different, the chins, the noses, the mouths, and these different sculptures were made of the same mold. And this is typical of Gideon, that each of his sculptures is unique.

Gideon, in fact, works with a plaster mold, his model made of plaster. He spreads plaster powder with a strainer, so that the glass does not stick to the plaster, and because of the fact that the powder has a lot of air, it is an excellent material for separation. When the sculpture is created, the glass moves the powder a little. In order to make the second statue he needs to spread the powder again. Each time he re-spreads powder by hand, and so it doesn't come out identical.

(Orly:) So you want to tell that he puts the cast into the oven and the cast doesn't explode?

The cast can expand and spread about 8 times. After 8 times it does not have the ability to expand anymore, it loses its quality and you can't work with it anymore.

(Orly:) and that's the reason why plaster is better than clay?

It doesn't work with clay because he doesn't create masses of sculptures. 7 sculptures is the maximum and it's enough for him. It's art. He doesn't want to work like a factory. He could have made models with stainless, in order to make millions of statues. But he doesn't want to, he see himself as an artist.
